BU vs. URI Opening Night 8-27-09

7:00pm It is time to rock n' roll at Nickerson Field. The defending American East Champion Boston University takes on Atlantic-10 foe Rhode Island. Tonight is the first game for both teams. Starting lineups coming shortly...

7:09pm Pretty good crown on hand at Nickerson for opening night. Lots of students just getting back onto campus.


7:11pm Lots of play in the middle of the field... both teams need to use the wings!!!


7:14pm BU starting to control the ball alot better...they are starting to get a feel for each other on the field.

7:17pm Terriers getting very close to putting one in the back of the net...defense looks strong.

7:21pm First sub of the game for Boston is Cynthia Warman.

7:22pm 26 minutes to go in the first half... BU has been offside numerous times...Terrier player down on the field...Dimirdjian is up and is OK.


7:27pm Dowd into the game for Rhode Island.

7:29pm URI coach said last years game was boring...tonight's game is billing up to that.

7:35pm What a play by the Rhode Island keeper!!! Diving in front of a Pallotta cross to deny the Terriers again! Megan McGoldrick now into the game.

7:32 McClernon barely offside...BU is trying to get offense but are being stymied.

7:39pm Krista Minto into the game... 9:20 to play in the first half.

7:42pm Two subs into the game for the Rams...first half is winding down and no one wants to score the first goal...great night for soccer though!!! looking across the field you can see the signs with all the AE championships and NCAA appearances...BU trying to make it three straight AE titles and five straight NCAA appearances.

7:49pm First half is over and Minto almost scores with :01 seconds left...rips a shot just over the crossbar! Enjoy the halftime and we will keep you updated.

8:04pm Halftime has come to a close here at Nickerson. Boston and Rhode Island are tied 0-0 with 45 minutes to play. Four shots for BU and 2 shots for Rhode Island at the half. BU has been offside 5 times!

8:12pm BU comes out strong. They are dominating the game. The fans are sticking around. Great to see a good crowd on hand for the first night game.


8:17pm McClernon has 1-1 with keeper but URI keeper comes out beautifully. It is only a matter of time until BU breaks through. Or it could be the other way around. URI could need just one opportunity to break through!


8:19pm BU SCORES!!!!! Jessica Luscinski scores the first BU goal of the year. Freshman Megan McGoldrick picks up the loose ball and crosses to Luscinski who buries it far post!!

8:21pm Hope to see alot of good things from Luscinski as the year goes on!!! She had a great freshman year and lets hope she can keep it going this year.

8:24pm 26 minutes to go in tonight's game. URI is starting to get more offensive. BU does not want to go into a defensive shell. Martinez into the game for URI. Corner kick coming up.

8:30pm Pallotta comes out. Has a great start to her senior season. She is going to be key for BU. 20 minutes to play in the second half. URI is going to have to start pushing the offensive. This could open up the field for another BU goal.

8:33pm Like what I see. This is what BU wants; score a goal and then not allow the other team a sniff of the offensive third. BU has been on lock down all night and they must avoid human nature and keep playing the full 90 minutes.

8:36pm Minto hits the crossbar on a beautiful cross from McGoldrick.

8:37pm It appears Emily Pallotta will come back into the game for the final push. 13 minutes to go in the game.

8:42pm Big collision between Reilly and Santos. Santos is still down on the ground. Reilly also appeared to be shaken up on the play. Reilly came out to the corner of the 18 and the two collided.

8:43pm Santos is up off the turf and is walking under her own power. Good news for Rams fans. She is there leading scorer from a year ago.

8:50pm Under five minutes to play at "The Nick". BU's defense has been as good as we thought it would be. Great possession game for BU as they have worn down the Rams. Early in the year conditioning is crucial and BU appears to be in very good shape.\

8:53 2-0 BU!!! Warman scores a beautiful goal. Dribbles around a defender on the end line and blasts it past URI keeper on the near post. Warman nearly lost the ball but kept after it and ripped it past the keeper. Under 1 minute to go...looks like a win for the Terriers!!!

9:15pm Final Score BU 2 URI 0 The Terriers are now 1-0 and return to "The Nick" on Sunday for Terrier Tailgate starting at 4:30pm. They will take on UMASS. Check back tomorrow for a full report on tonight's game.
