Women's Hockey Loses First Battle of Comm. Ave.

The visiting Boston College Eagles defeated the Boston University women’s ice hockey team on Monday night at Walter Brown Arena. The 2-1 loss leaves BU at 1-1-0 in Hockey East play and 3-2-4 overall, while BC improved to 1-1-1 in conference and 2-2-4 overall.

After a slow, scoreless first period with only 8 shots on goal combined between the two teams, things started to open up in the second period.

Senior forward Allie Thunstrom (’10) started off the scoring for the Eagles seven minutes into the period. Thunstrom took a pass from sophomore forward Mary Restuccia ('12) at center ice and rushed toward Terriers senior goaltender Melissa Haber (’10) at full speed. Thunstrom’s quick wrist shot beat Haber (14 saves) five-hole for the first tally of the game.

Luckily for BU, its offense needed only 48 seconds to tie it back up. Senior forward Melissa Anderson (’10) lost control of the puck on the right point but freshman forward Jill Cardella (’13) was quick to pick it up and throw it over the shoulder of BC freshman goalie Corinne Boyles (’13). 

Anderson was credited with an assist on the score for her 100^th career point for the Terriers, and is now only the second player in the history of the BU Women’s Ice Hockey program to reach the century mark, after former Terriers co-captain Gina Kearns ('10) became the first to cross the frontier late last season.  Anderson is now within just two points of tying Kearns’ all-time program record of 102.

Although BU outshot BC 17-6 in the second period, the Terriers were unable to capitalize again and take the lead. Then in the final frame, a scramble in front of the net led to the game-winning goal by BC freshman forward Ashley Motherwell (’13) three minutes in, and the Eagles were able to hold off the Terriers the rest of the way.

The Terriers will be back on the ice Friday, November 6 at home to take on the No. 4 New Hampshire Wildcats, who are 3-0-0 in conference play.  Game time is set for 7 pm.
