Bonino and Rollheiser Return for Terriers

The Boston University Terriers men’s hockey team has been marred by injuries to start the season. Injuries to some of the Terriers top players had left BU shorthanded and 2-6-0 on the season. Saturday night, assistant captain Nick Bonino and back-up goalie Grant Rollheiser made their returns to the Terriers lineup.
These two helped backbone the Terriers to a 6-4 victory over the Merrimack Warriors. Bonino, the Terriers top returning scorer, recorded two assists and Rollheiser stopped 25 shots, including 12 in the third period, to earn the victory in his first start since last year’s regular season finale (a 3-0 shutout of Providence).
Bonino had been scoreless in the first three games of the year before suffering a dislocated shoulder and Rollheiser has been working back from a sprained right ankle he suffered before the season started.
“I thought that my goaltender played real well tonight,” said head coach Jack Parker. “We needed a win and he got it for us.”
Rollheiser was strong throughout the game and showed no signs of the ankle injury that had sidelined him for the first month of the season. On numerous occasions he pushed off of the right ankle to move across his crease to make a save. One big save came at the tail end of the first as he was able to get back across and deflect a Warrior shot wide and keep the game scoreless. He made an even bigger save in the third with game in the balance.
The puck popped free on the far post and Merrimack’s Jesse Todd just needed to tap it in but Rollheiser used his entire 6’5 frame to reach back across and deny Todd the game-tying goal.
“I think he competed tonight,” said junior captain Kevin Shattenkirk of Rollheiser’s play. “Whenever a goalie plays like that, it really just gives the defensemen confidence. He made some big saves for us down the stretch.”
Bonino’s return gave the Terriers some confidence offensively. With his two points and a Terriers victory, BU has not lost in the last 36 games Bonino has scored.
“It felt good to be back in the locker room with the guys and getting prepared for the game on gameday instead of not getting prepared and not playing,” said Bonino after the game. “It felt great to get back in the lineup and great to get a win.”
Bonino picked up his first point of the year with an assist on BU’s third goal. Simon Demers turned the puck over inside his own blueline leaving Bonino and sophomore Chris Connolly with a 2-on-1. Connolly waited patiently and then ripped the Bonino pass into the back of the net. His second assist came on senior Colby Cohen’s power play goal in the second. Bonino played it back to Shattenkirk, who fed Cohen for the one-timer.
“We’re just starting to get those guys healthy and they all bring a lot to the team,” said Connolly of the Terriers injury woes. “We know it’s going to bring a lot and obviously, it helped us win tonight.”
BU hopes to have two more players return from injuries next week, sophomore David Warsofsky and freshman Alex Chiasson.
