Mens Hockey: Terriers Fall to New Hampshire
New Hampshire beats BU 4-2 in Durham

In a matchup of two underachieving powers, the University of New Hampshire (4-6-2, 4-2-1 HE) scored two third period goals to pull away for a 4-2 victory over the Boston University Terriers (3-7-0, 2-6-0 HE) Friday night at the Whittemore Center in Durham.
Paul Thompson recorded a goal and an assist, Bobby Butler scored his team leading tenth goal and Brian Foster made 21 saves to lead the Wildcats to their 4th Hockey East win of the year. The Wildcats special teams scored twice on the power play and killed off five Terrier extra man opportunities.
“I was pleased with the overall play of the game,” said UNH head coach Dick Umile. “It was a good team effort against a good team.”
Leading 2-1 entering the third, UNH killed off a BU penalty and then grabbed a 3-1 lead eight minutes in. Greg Manz won the faceoff cleanly and John Henrion wristed it quickly past Kieran Millan (“12). It was the second time in the game UNH had scored right off of an offensive zone faceoff. Damon Kipp’s first period goal came directly off a clean faceoff win.
“Henrion’s goal was a big goal for us,” said Umile. “That was a great shot by John.”
BU quickly responded 41 seconds later on a Ross Gaudet (’12) goal but Thompson scored three minutes later on the power play to make it 4-2. The Terriers were unable to clear the zone and Matt Campanale found Thompson in front and he roofed it over a vulnerable Millan.
Down 1-0, the Terriers came out strong in the second and had the Wildcats on their heels for the first ten minutes. Zach Cohen (’10) fired a shot over the shoulder of Foster right off a faceoff win from Cory Trivino (’12). Freshmen linemates Alex Chiasson (’13) and Justin Courtnall (’13) combined to win battles along the offensive boards but the Terriers couldn’t get anything else past Foster. The senior goalie stood tall with 12 second period saves.
Back-to-back penalties put the Terriers down 5-on-3 and changed the momentum. Vinny Saponari (’12) went off for hooking and Sean Escobedo was sent off for a controversial boarding call 39 seconds later. The Wildcats used the open ice and pressured Millan. Millan made a spectacular save on Butler but could not cover the puck and moments later Butler one-timed a shot past Millan from the bottom of the left circle to give UNH the 2-1 lead.
BU head coach Jack Parker called the back-to-back penalties a “pathetic problem.” “It’s not that important to them to fight hard and be tenacious without being stupid,” he said.
UNH controlled play early on and nearly broke through in the first few minutes of play. BU’s Ben Rosen (’13) turned the puck over at the blue line and Stevie Moses and Peter LeBlanc were left alone with Millan. Moses moved the puck to LeBlanc and LeBlanc quickly passed the puck back to Moses on the left side of the net but the shot went wide.
Millan was strong in goal for BU despite surrendering four goals. The seven Terriers freshmen also continued to impress Parker.
“He [Millan] played extremely well,” said Parker. “All our freshmen are playing well. They come to play every night.”
The loss puts BU in the cellar with UNH heading to Agganis Arena tomorrow night.
“We really put ourselves in a hole here,” said Parker.
