Men's Basketball Taking Things One Day At a Time
by Tim Larew
“One day at a time.” Prior to Wednesday’s practice in Case Gym, this phrase was reiterated again and again. For the Terriers, it’s not just a simple philosophy and a careful plan of attack, but also a way of life to begin a new era. This year, Head Coach Patrick Chambers has adopted it for his team, and everyone is buying in.
As the preseason America East favorite, Boston University men’s basketball team is preparing tirelessly for the season. The enthusiasm and energy level amongst the players are undeniable. Perhaps it is senior co-captains Tyler Morris (’10) and Carlos Strong (’10) bouncing back from injuries and leading their teammates in practice. Perhaps it is Chambers’ up-tempo style and focus on nothing but the immediate future. Regardless of what it is, there’s something special that’s making BU hard to ignore.
With eight returning seniors, two preseason all-conference players in Corey Lowe (’10) and John Holland (’09), and a daunting non-conference schedule including games against George Washington and Connecticut, the headlines could easily become the team’s focus. Early on, however, Chambers made it clear that nothing matters but the present. “Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed for any of us,” Chambers said, “If we can focus on one day, one practice, one possession at a time, that will carry over and we’ll become the best team we can be.”
It’s clear that Chambers’ mentality has carried over to his players. “Every year is a new year and every day is a new day,” Morris said, “we need to concentrate on this practice and this game, and then the rest will take care of itself.”
Even with the #1 preseason conference ranking and a target on their backs, the Terriers remain unfazed. “It’s an honor to be named the top team coming in,” Chambers said, “but it’s what happens in February and March that counts.”
Again, Morris agreed. “We can’t look too far ahead regardless of where we’re at now. Our sense of urgency begins and ends with today,” said the senior guard.
As for today, it’s all about working hard and having fun. “I’m 100% healthy, and I couldn’t be more ready to be back,” Strong said, “I’m just happy I can get out there on the floor playing basketball with my teammates and my friends.”
With the season opener November 13th at Iona approaching quickly, “now” has just about arrived. “Guys are playing as hard as they’ve ever played, and they’re still trying to give me more,” Chambers said, adding, “There are sunny skies ahead.”
If dedication and hard work are any indication of what’s to come for BU basketball this season, Chambers’ forecast is looking good.
