Early run sparks Gaels

The Boston University men’s basketball team’s trip to Iona for the season opener was a frustrating one, as the Gaels took the early lead and never looked back. The 22 Terrier turnovers and defensive lapses headlined the 82-73 loss in Head Coach Pat Chambers’ first game at the helm Friday night.
Iona brought stifling full court pressure from the tip and didn’t let up for until the final buzzer sounded. The pressure yielded consecutive BU turnovers leading to an aggravated Chambers using two timeouts in the first five minutes to reorganize his squad. The Terriers took the 4-2 lead on a Jake O’Brien (’12) free throw, but never got it back as Iona responded with a three-ball from Kyle Smyth and never relinquished control. The Gaels controlled the pace from start to finish, forcing the Terriers to a speed they looked uncomfortable with.
Each time BU appeared to be making a run due in large part to Carlos Strong’s (’10) work on the offensive glass, Iona shifted the momentum with a forced turnover or a connection from long range. Both teams made twelve threes, but for the Gaels the big shots came at the right times.
After tying the game at 48 on one of Tyler Morris’ (’10) three three-pointers to start the second half, the Terriers saw their short-lived run come to an end as they allowed threes from Smyth, Scott Machado, and Jonathan Huffman en route to a Gael 13-1 run.
BU made a few more runs at the lead sparked by co-Captains Strong, Morris, and Corey Lowe (’10), but they weren’t able to make the crucial stops on the defensive end. With 3:40 left in the game, they closed the gap to four on an O’Brien jumper, but Iona responded and never looked back.
Morris was solid for the Terriers with 21 points before fouling out with just under two minutes to go. Strong reached double digits in points and rebounds, giving a 12 point, 11 rebound effort. In the tough loss, the inside presence of senior forward Scott Brittan ('10) was sorely missed.
BU will look to rebound on Tuesday with a tough non-conference matchup against George Washington at home.
