#8 Women's Hockey Skates Past BC

The Boston University (6-4-5, 4-3-1-1) women’s ice hockey Team defeated Boston College (4-4-5, 3-3-2-2) 4-0 at Conte Forum Wednesday night. The win moves the Terriers into a tie with the rival Eagles for third place in the Hockey East standings.

BU got things going just shy of the midway point of the first. A Tracey Johnson interference penalty put the Terriers on the powerplay. While on the man advantage, Lauren Cherewyk ('11) put home the rebound on a Jenelle Kohanchuk ('12) shot to give BU the 1-0 lead with 9:19 to go in the first period.

At 16:23 of the first, Jill Cardella ('13) scored to double the Terriers’ lead. After a failed two on one attempt by BU, Cardella ('13) swooped in to pick up the loose puck and beat BC’s goalie Kiera Kingston five-hole.

With 4:52 left in the second period, BU found itself back on the power play after Mary Restuccia took a penalty. On the ensuing power play, second BU would add to its lead as a shot from Carly Warren ('12) found its way into the back of the net.

Just over two minutes later, defenseman Sarah Appleton ('10) added to the Terriers lead making the score 4-0 on a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle.

The Terriers offense broke through against one of the stingiest defenses in the nation. Coming into the game, the Eagles only allowed 1.9 goals per game. They also managed to chase Kingston out of the net after the second period. Kingston came into the game with an astounding .957 save percentage and a 1.14 GAA.

In addition to the offense putting up a high number of goals against a difficult opponent, the story of the game was goaltender Melissa Haber ('10). Haber made 37 saves in her second shutout of the season, and seventh of her career.

On the shutout performance by Haber, head coach Brian Durocher said “I think she was also well supported tonight. The (37) shots seemed to be slightly inflated and there weren’t the two foot back door goals like we gave up in Providence (last Sunday).”
