Women's Soccer Wins By A Touchdown

There are very few occasions in sports when everything goes right. It seems like the Boston University women’s soccer team hit on one of those moments in their 7-0 feast on Bryant University.

Seven different Terriers put up a goal and twelve players posted points amidst the slaughter of the Bulldogs. Two freshmen posted their first collegiate goals, and three bench players scored goals.

The Terriers began the rout in the 18th minute when sophomore midfielder Jessica Luscinski (’12) took the ball to the six-yard line, and flicked a pass past Bryant goalie Katie Mitchell. There waiting was senior forward Farrell McClernon (’10) who tapped the ball in for her fifth goal of the season.

Luscinski, who has had trouble scoring and better at finding the crossbar this year would be elated to score a goal of her own just six minutes later in a reversal of roles. McClernon would dish a pass into the 18-yardbox where Luscinski waited to one time it in for her 4th goal of the year.

Luscinski leads the Terriers in points (16), but has had awful luck finding the back of the net.

“I’m at six crossbars this year; it’s kind of the joke of the team,” Luscinski said. “It was really nice to get that goal in just for my own confidence and for the team.”

Senior midfielder Emily Pallotta (’10) would add the fourth Terrier goal when she headed in a corner kick from freshman midfielder Megan McGoldrick (’13) in the first ten minutes of the second half. It would be Pallotta’s sixth goal of the year, which leads the Terriers.

McGoldrick would have a goal of her own later on, off a cross from sophomore forward Cynthia Warman (’12) that McGoldrick planted into the upper 90. It would be McGoldrick’s fourth goal of the year.

Sophomore midfielder Brittany Heist (’13) and freshman forward Adrienne Anderson (’13) both scored their first collegiate goals. Another freshman, forward Brea Hewitt (’13)had several opportunities and pushed for her first career goal, but could only come away with a solid effort.

As for Bryant, it had just six shots and only one was on goal and BU senior goalie Janie Reilly had an easy game, having to make just one save.

It was a valiant effort for Bryant who is in its second year of a five-year transition period from Division II to Division I. However, Bryant University, which belongs to the Northeast Conference, could not slow the Terriers who had 28 shots, 15 on net.

McClernon said with the seven-goal effort the Terriers had surpassed their preseason objective of scoring 30 goals on the season. They now have 32.

BU coach Nancy Feldman said that the Terriers should not be content with 30 goals since the Terriers still have one game remaining against UMBC. Feldman feels that bumping the objective up three goals will be sufficient enough.

“We knew that since we had a whole new back line, with the exception of Casey [Brown], that we were going to have to score a lot more goals this year to be successful, so in the preseason we said ‘We need to get better than 30 goals,” Feldman said. “Now we’re going to have to reset the goal. Maybe we’ll push that number up to 35.
