Women's Soccer: Terrier Eye Repeat

The Boston University Terriers womens soccer team was 5-0 and cruising through America East play before they played the Stony Brook Seawolves over a week ago. In terrible playing conditions, the Terriers received a crushing blow. The Seawolves ended BU’s 21-game conference unbeaten streak and claimed the top spot in the standings.

Flash forward a week and everything has changed. BU knocked off Hartford in a snow storm on Sunday while the Albany Great Danes were upsetting Stony Brook putting BU back in first. Four days later, Stony Brook was upset again, this time by Maine, giving the Terriers their third straight conference regular season title without even having to play the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) on Sunday.

A win or a tie on Sunday would give the Terriers the outright title but a loss and a Binghamton University win on Sunday would give BU a share of the title. The regular season title only gives BU the #1 seed in the tournament, but head coach Nancy Feldman wasn’t about to downplay it.

“We win the game on the Sunday and we are hoisting the regular season trophy,” said Feldman following Wednesday’s big win over Bryant. “There’s not a trophy ceremony for that, it’s a pretty big deal. I think that’s a hard thing to do for a third year in a row. It’s a credit to these guys that focus every day, their commitment and discipline and not taking a day off.”

Sunday, BU will be taking on the last place Retrievers who have given up an astounding 2.83 goals per game. The two teams are polar opposites on the stat sheet with BU leading the league in goals (32) and UMBC tied for the least (14). BU had given up the fewest goals (13) while UMBC has given up the most (46).

It will also be an emotional day at Nickerson on Sunday. Eight seniors will be playing the final regular season home game of their careers. Casey Brown, Mara Osher, Taleen Dimirdjian, Janie Reilly, Emily Pallotta, Laura Schwartz, Farrell McClernon and Mikaela Hansen will all be honored prior to the game. The quartet has helped BU to a 50-23-8 record over the last four years including an amazing 30-2-3 record at Nickerson Field.

Boston University will open up play in the America East conference tournament next Sunday (Nov. 1) when they host a semifinal game. The final five spots will be determined following play on Sunday.
