Women's Soccer: Stony Brook Upsets Terriers

Sa’sha Kershaw and Dominique Adamo scored a 1:39 apart in the first half and the Stony Brook Seawolves (5-0-1 AE, 6-7-2) held on to upset the Boston University Terriers (5-1-0 AE, 9-5-2), 2-1, Thursday night in an America East showdown at a cold and rainy LaValle Stadium.

The loss snaps the Terriers seven-game win streak and their 21-game conference unbeaten streak. BU had not lost an America East game since October 18, 2007. The two teams met in last year’s conference championship game, with the Terriers winning 2-1. Stony Brook now remains as the only unbeaten team in America East.

Despite being outshot 11 to three, Stony Brook scored on the only two shots they put on net in the first half. Kershaw put Stony Brook on the board in the ninth minute as she slid a pass from Holly Razzaghi past senior Janie Reilly (’10) who had come out to challenge her. The Seawolves would strike just over a minute and half later when Adamo placed a shot into the left corner of the net. Taryn Schoenbeck picked up the assist on the play.

BU cut the lead in half in the 23rd minute off a goal from freshman midfielder Megan McGoldrick (‘13). McGoldrick (’13) drove a shot from 20 yards out off the right post and in for her third goal of the season. It was the closest the Terriers would get. The ‘Harvard Killer’ nearly tied it two minutes later but her attempt was denied by Stony Brook goalie Marisa Viola. Viola finished the first half with five saves.

In the second half the Terriers managed just three shots. Viola was not forced to make a save in the half but sophomore Jessica Luscinski (’12) shot in the 69th minute hit the crossbar. BU did not have a shot attempt the rest of the night. McGoldrick and Luscinski (’12) led BU with four shots apiece and Reilly made one save on the night.

It was once again the tempo that had head coach Nancy Feldman was not happy with.
“We did not hold the temp of the game as well as we needed to,” said Feldman following the team’s first conference loss in two years. “We were rushed and I didn’t think we kept our composure to play like we need to play. We got caught up in their style and their pace and the hub-bub surrounding the game.”

BU now sits in second place with two conference games remaining beginning with Sunday’s showdown with Hartford. “Everyone needs to look at themselves and see what they need to do better, to handle themselves better. We can’t let one loss turn into two.”

Stony Brook is now in the driver’s seat with two games remaining. If the Seawolves win out they will capture the America East Regular Season Title and home-field advantage in the tournament. A loss to either the University of Maine or the University of Albany and BU victories over Hartford and UMBC would give the regular season title to the Terriers.
