Hockey East Weekend Preview

Hockey East play kicks off in just under an hour. No. 2 BU visits UMass in Amherst to take on the Minutemen, officially commencing their defense of the national championship. It certainly won’t be easy Friday night, despite BU holding an impressive edge in the all-time series against the Minutemen (45-8-3). Over the past nine meetings, BU is just 4-3-2 against UMass, and the passionate fans at the Mullins Center will be trying all night long to get into the heads of the Terriers.
For UMass, the contest is an early opportunity to make a statement and cement their place among the nation’s top programs. UMass returns 66.2 percent of its point production from last season with James Marcou (47 pts) and Casey Wellman (33 pts) returning. The Minutemen boast an impressive defensive pair in Martin Nolet and Justin Braun. In net, Paul Dainton and Dan Meyers are as solid a duo as there is in the conference. Dainton finished 12-14-1 with a 2.45 goals against average and a .913 save percentage, appearing in 28 games after being sidelined by injury in the early portion of the season.
Other Hockey East contests this weekend…
New Hampshire will host No. 1 Miami in the HEA/CCHA Challenge in Durham. They meet for the first time since March 24, 2007, a 2-1 victory for Miami. Maine also hosts Michigan State in the other HEA/CCHA Challenge tilt in Orono, where the Black Bears look to kick off their homecoming weekend with a win.
Providence, meanwhile, travels to No. 7 Notre Dame. On Thursday night, the Friars upset the Fighting Irish 3-2, with freshman Aaron Jamnick scoring the game-winner. It was the Friars’ first victory over the Irish since October 15, 1999. The two teams play again tonight at 7 p.m.
No. 12 Boston College travels to No. 11 Vermont for a Sunday afternoon game at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Catamounts are coming off a split last weekend with then-No. 1 Denver.
Back in Boston, Northeastern will open the doors to the newly renovated Matthews Arena for the first time this season. The Huskies host Bentley after splitting with Colorado College last weekend.
Merrimack hosts two Atlantic Hockey squads Friday and Saturday night. It will be the Crusaders of Holy Cross tonight, while Army visits Saturday.
