Highlighting the Defensive Prowess

While facing far fewer questions than the offensive unit, BU’s blue-liners will sure lack the presence that Hobey Baker-winner Matt Gilroy brought not only last season, but throughout his career. But those who are returning should keep head coach Jack Parker at ease. Headlining the defensive corps are All-American captain Kevin Shattenkirk ('11), Frozen Four-MVP Colby Cohen ('11), fan-favorite Eric Gryba ('10) and David Warsofsky ('12).

Shattenkirk ('11) and Cohen ('11), paired throughout their first two seasons, will lead the group and are expected to anchor a unit that was regarded last year as one of the best in the country. Their +28 and +23 over/under statistic, respectively, is indicative of just how dominant the pair was when on the ice.

Gryba ('10) returns with a bit more responsibility now, as he wears the white ‘A’ on his jersey. Last year, he proved he no longer was just the hard-hitting brute who checked first and thought later, often associated with pointless penalties rather than smart skating. That evolution and maturation as a player led to Parker tabbing him as an assistant captain.

He was paired with Warsofsky last season, who racked up 23 points, including a memorable shorthanded goal in the Beanpot Championship game. The two of them were one of the more dynamic pairs in Hockey East: Gryba squashed opponents’ scoring chances while Warsofsky kept them in check with his constant threat to score.

Joining them will be a trio of freshmen defenders who have the opportunity to contribute right off the bat. Among them are highly touted Max Nicastro ('13), a lanky puck handling blue-liner who can find the back of the net and should be a regular in the lineup. Sean Escobedo ('13) and Ben Rosen ('13) will fight for the other spot. Both are tough, physical defenders who can neutralize opposing forwards with their strength.
