Bulldog Effort from Terriers

The Boston University Terriers women’s soccer team did a lot of things right in its 7-0 victory over the Bryant Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon at Nickerson Field. BU had total control from start to finish and got great games from a lot of players.

Feisty Heist:

After missing all of last year due to injury, sophomore midfielder Brittany Heist (’12) has been a force off the bench for the Terriers. Wednesday, the feisty midfielder earned herself a start and was finally able to tally her first collegiate goal. Heist was in the right place at the right time as the ball came to the top of the box. She struck it beautifully off the left post and into the back of the net.

“She has really played herself into a starting role,” said BU coach Nancy Feldman of her decision to start Heist over freshman midfielder Megan McGoldrick (’13). “It’s not anything Megan hadn’t been doing its just Brittany really deserved it because how she was performing.”

The non-start appeared have no effect on the play of McGoldrick. The ‘Harvard Killer’ came off the bench to record three points on a goal and an assist.

“I think that competitors take that as a kick in the pants,” said Feldman of McGoldrick’s performance off the bench. “I think she wants to prove that she belongs on the field and she did that with her play today coming off the bench.”

McClernon-Luscinski Connection:

The play of senior forward Farrell McClernon (’10) and sophomore midfielder Jessica Luscinski (’12) was another good sign against Bryant. The tandem combined for six points (2g, 2a) as each assisted on the others goal. McClernon struck first with her fifth goal of the year, 4th game-winner, off an assist from Luscinski and then setup Luscinski minutes later for her 4th goal of the year.

“I think we are looking for each other,” said Luscinski of her work with McClernon. “We are looking for a purposeful pass in the box and its working for us.”

Coach Feldman is enjoying the chemistry of the two.

“Its starting to really be a nice little duo,” said Feldman. “It’s really developed over the last couple of games. You can see how happy Farrell was to be able to assist on Jess’ goal. They are finding each other and developing a real good chemistry. It doesn’t really matter who serves it up and who puts it in the back of the net. Whichever way it goes they are really excited to work together.”

The three points moved McClernon into 8th place all-time in points with 49. It was also Luscinski’s 8th assist of the year which puts her three back of the record set 8 years ago by Deidre Enos.

Topping 30:

One of the goals of this year’s Terriers team was to score 30 goals. BU went into Wednesday’s game with 25 and two games remaining. The 7-goal outburst put BU over the goal-plateau with one game to spare.

“We knew this year because we had a brand new back line that we were going to have score more goals this year to be successful,” said Feldman of the goal that was thought of in preseason. “Now we are going to have to reset the goal because I don’t want us going into Sunday’s game not thinking we have a higher goal to reach.”

Other Notes from Wednesday:

-10 different Terriers recorded a point in the win with sophomores Krista Minto (’12), Brew Hewitt (’12) and Heist (’12) all recording their first points.

-7 different Terriers scored on the afternoon.

-It is the 10th shutout of the year for BU. They shutout 12 opponents last year.
Senior Emily Pallotta (’10) also joined the top ten career scoring list with her team leading sixth goal of the year.
