BU Swimming Kicks Off Season In Dominating Fashion

The Boston University Terrier swimming team dominated the Maine Black Bears in its home opener at the Competition Pool yesterday. The women won 169-117 and the men came out on top, 167-92.
The meet started off with the BU women finishing one and two in the 200-yard medley. The winning team, consisting of junior Maria McIntyre, sophomore Kristen Connors, senior Emily Munday and freshman Lauren Drake, had a time of 1:45.37 followed by the team consisting of freshmen Kara Zebrowski, Liz Floyd and Alex Hunter, along with junior Kristen Tullis, with a time of 1:50.36.
Junior Clara Von Allen won the women’s 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:40.03, which was 20 seconds faster than the closest competitor. She looked strong in the water as she also took first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:27.04.
The women finished one, two and three in the 200-yard IM. Drake came in first (2:10.92) followed by Munday (2.12.35) and freshman Katie Radin (2.13.09). There was a lot of yelling from the BU side of the pool during this race and the cheering paid off.
The women finished the meet strong in the 400-yard free relay, with times of 3:34.90 in first, 3:39.87 in second place and 3:40.06 in third. It was a nice finish to a long day at the pool for the women’s team.
The divers were also on their A game today. Freshman Melinda Matyas, along with juniors Sarah Colton and Bailey O’Brien, owned the boards, as they swept both the 1M and 3M.
The men’s team followed suit with the women. Sophomore Justin Gilmartin, senior Tyson Slesnick, sophomore Daniel Kempf and senior Arik Seiler took first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.34. It was a better start for the men’s team who was coming off a loss from last week’s meet against UMass.
Junior Kyle Ernst took over the pool in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:54.31. His closest competitor was freshman teammate Riley Kammer who came in with a time of 10:11.15.
The Terrier men swept not only the 200-yard freestyle, but the 100 yard backstroke as well, with junior Mark Nakanishi coming in first, sophomore Wyatt Collins in second, freshman Jessie Martucci in third, sophomore Jackson Hill in fourth, senior Kyle Berg in fifth and junior Matt Rickett in sixth, in both races.
It was a sweep kind of day for the men, as they also took one, two and three in the 200-yard fly with junior Byron Kallert leading with a time of 1:56.92, followed by Slesnick at 1:58.58 and senior Ben Kaiser at 2:00.04. The race wasn’t even close for the Black Bears.
Junior Tanner Knorr, who is the American East Diver of the Week, absolutely controlled the diving, winning the 1M boards with a score of 313.28 and the 3M boards with a 283.35.
