Women's Hockey Romps In Exhibition

The Boston University Women’s hockey team won their first and only exhibition game, 7-1, against the Durham West Jr. Lightning. The Terriers dominated from start to finish, using a stifling forecheck and an efficient backcheck to prevent the Lightning from establishing any offensive presence. They outshot their opponents 51-7 on the afternoon.
Six different players scored and the 19 points tallied came from all over the roster. All of the Terriers on the top three lines recorded at least a goal or an assist.
“I think it’s nice when people get a puck in the net even if it’s the exhibition season,” said BU coach Brian Durocher. “They start to feel good about themselves.”
Junior forward Jillian Kirchner ('11) opened the scoring 3:40 into the game, collecting the puck from junior forward Holly Lorms ('11) in the corner and wrapping a slick backhand around the near post. That would be the only score of the first period though, as Lightning goalie Victoria Powers was able to settle in and stand tall against the rest of the Terrier attack.
Early in the second, Durham answered back with a quick power play goal from forward Gillian Morgan. BU regained the lead with a tally from Lorms, and looked poised to add to it late in the period during an extended 2-man advantage, but the Terriers’ power play unit was unable to capitalize. But with the constant pressure that the forecheck was applying (Durham only managed one shot on goal during the period – Morgan’s goal), it was only a matter of time before BU’s offense broke the game wide open.
After the disappointing 5-on-3 power play, the Terriers' special teams came out in the third period firing on all cylinders. Senior forward Laurel Koller ('10) scored on the power play just 1:49 into the period. Less than three minutes later, fellow senior forward Jonnie Bloemers ('10) put another one behind goalie Chantal Bicket to make it a 4-1 game on another power play (Durham switched goalies midway through the second period, while Durocher gave each of his netminders – seniors Melissa Haber ('10) and Ashley Leichliter ('10) and freshman Alissa Fromkin ('13) – a period of work).
Sophomore defenseman Carly Warren ('12) also netted a man-advantage tally and junior forward Lauren Cherewyk ('11) rounded out the scoring for the afternoon, putting both of her goals in the final 6 minutes of play, one at even strength and the other on the power play.
With six freshmen skaters on the ice – four forwards and two defensemen – and a first year goaltender on the roster, Durocher believed that the exhibition game was the perfect way to ease the freshmen into the college level of play.
“I think that it was nice that they all got their feet wet, got to see a little college hockey,” Durocher said. “I think they all showed they have some pretty good hockey intelligence. They got a sense for what speed we try to play at.”
Durocher is hopeful that sophomore defenseman Tara Watchorn ('12), who sat out of the game against her former team because of an ankle injury, will be ready for the start of the regular season. Watchorn paced all defenseman last year with 6 goals, and was named a member of Hockey East’s All-Rookie Team.
With the victory under their belt, the Terriers are looking forward to this weekend when they host Ohio State for a two-game series to kick off the regular season. The opener will be Friday, October 2nd at 7 pm and be sure to tune in to WTBU for the broadcast.
