Terriers End Scoring Drought, Beat Harvard

After almost 400 minutes of game time, the Terriers finally broke their scoreless streak in a 1-0 win over Harvard.

Freshman Megan McGoldrick (’13) one-timed a left footed shot past the Crimson’s keeper, Lauren Mann, 17 minutes into the game, to give the Terriers the edge they needed. The goal was the first by a Terrier since their 1-1 tie against Loyola on September 4. It was McGoldrick’s ('13) first collegiate goal as well.

“It’s a great feeling,” McGoldrick said. “I was never even expecting to play out here and to be the winning goal; it’s a great feeling.”

McGoldrick already has two assists and 15 shots so far this year.

BU head coach Nancy Feldman commented on how McGoldrick was able to slow down for the BU offense throughout the season.

“She’s a player that the game is slow for,” Feldman said. “She’s able to stay in the zone, and she lets things go when something doesn’t go well.”

The Terriers played a slower game than they have in the past. BU used the entire field, even sometimes passing the ball backward to create space. As a result, the Terriers maintained control of possession for the majority of the game.

The Terriers were also a bit too aggressive at times, however. They were called for offsides six times during the game.

When BU got into the 18-yard box, they thrived. The Terriers created numerous opportunities to score, and had an impressive 15 shots, six of them on goal. Senior Farrell McClernon (’10) seemed to power the offense, with five shots and created frequent opportunities for other players.

The Terriers just missed making it a two score game in the second half when senior Mara Osher (’10) crossed a long pass to senior Taleen Dimirdjian (’10) who headed it towards the net. Lauren Mann, however, dove and punched the shot out of the way.

The Terriers defense also excelled, holding the Crimson to just seven shots, four on goal. In addition, BU welcomed back senior Casey Brown (’10) to defense after she missed three games with a sprained ankle. Brown took over for her replacement, senior defender Laura Schwartz (’10), who held up the backfield in Brown’s absence.

BU’s next match-up will be against the Dartmouth Big Green on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Nickerson Field. The Terriers will then begin their in-conference schedule, beginning with a home game against Binghamton on Sunday.
