Terriers Dominate UMass; Outshoot Minutewomen 30-1

The Boston University women’s soccer team (2-0-0) turned in a dominating performance for the Terrier Tailgate as they outshot the University of Massachusetts Minutewomen (0-2-0), 30-1, on their way to a 2-0 victory in front of a record crowd of 4,963 Sunday night at Nickerson Field.

BU outshot UMass 19-0 in the first half and finally broke through with two goals in a seven-minute span late in the half. Senior forward Farrell McClernon (’10) broke the deadlock in the 29th minute with her first goal of the year. Freshman midfielder Megan McGoldrick (’13) found McClernon on the fringe of the 18 yard box and McClernon moved across the top of the 18 before ripping a shot back across her body into the far right corner of the net.
“It was a great to get one,” said McClernon following Sunday’s game. “We have a ton of new people on our offense this year so it is very dynamic. We have created a ton of chances and we are getting some finishes.”
The Terriers made it 2-0 seven minutes later when sophomore midfielder Jessica Luscinski (’12) headed home a beautiful cross from senior back Mara Osher (’10). Osher received the ball from McGoldrick and lofted a cross into the 18-yard box where Luscinski leaped over UMass’ Katie Ruggles to head it home for her second goal of the year.
BU certainly created chances all night long but were only able to produce the two goals. Numerous chances sailed over the crossbar and senior forward Taleen Dimirdjian ('10) had a great chance early on. Dimirdjian volleyed sophomore midfielder Cynthia Warman's ('12) cross off the inside of the post but the ball rolled right along the goal line before being cleared out by the defense.
Senior Janie Reilly ('10) and sophomore Annie Tooley ('12) once again combined on the clean sheet with neither keeper recording a save. Reilly fielded just two crosses in her half of play and Tooley watched as the only shot UMass had sailed over the net on a free kick in the second half.
“We were tentative early on,” said BU coach Nancy Feldman of her team’s performance. “The good news is we put balls in the back of the net…but the bad news is we are going to have to play quicker, with more urgency and be more aggressive to get where we want to go.”
BU now embarks on a six-game road trip that starts with cross-town rival #20 Boston College on Wednesday in Chestnut Hill. The Eagles handed the Terriers their only home loss last season, 1-0. BU returns home on September 20th when they take on Harvard at 6pm at Nickerson.
