Men’s Soccer 2008 Recap

The Boston University men’s soccer team had one of its most successful seasons in club history in 2008. The Terriers finished with a record of 12-6-3 and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In addition to the NCAA Tournament berth, the team captured another America East title under coach Neil Roberts, who has been at the helm for the Terriers the past 24 seasons.

After opening the season to a brutal 0-3-1 start, the Terriers, with losses to three ranked teams (Boston College the University of Massachusetts, and St. Johns), and a draw with another (University of Connecticut), BU rebounded in the remainder of non-conference play going 3-1-1.
In conference play, BU was able to earn the top seed in the America East conference tournament, with a record of 6-1-1, the only loss being to the Great Danes of the University of Albany. After a first round bye in the tournament, the Terriers knocked off the University of Vermont and Binghamton to by scores of 2-1 and 1-0 (linked above) to earn their 7th America East title and 14th trip in the NCAA Tournament.
Entering the tournament on a nine-game unbeaten streak, BU was able to continue its hot play with a victory, 1-0, over Farleigh Dickinson at Nickerson Field. It was the first tournament game to be held at Nickerson since 2004 and senior forward Jin Oh ('09), who scored the decisive goal in the victory over Binghamton in the AE finals, was once again the hero, scoring the lone goal of the game with 50 seconds to go in the first half.
The run would end there for the Terriers however. #3 seed St. John’s ended the Terriers season in a hard fought 1-0 defeat for BU a few days later.
As a whole, the season was a very successful one for the Terriers, as the team used a balanced attack and contributions from all four classes to make its NCAA Tournament run.
The Terriers were able to rack up many highlights throughout the season including:
-Player of the Week honors for senior goalkeeper Hrafn Davidsson ('09), junior midfielder Tom Strackhouse ('10), junior forward Shaun Taylor ('10)
-AE All-Rookie honors to midfielders Michael Bustamante ('12) and Colin Henry ('12)
-Bustamante also earned a spot on the Soccer America’s Freshman All-America Team, in addition to being named 2008 AE Rookie of the Year and Midfielder of the Year
-Junior midfielders Samuel Appiah ('10) and Richy Dorman ('10), along with junior forward Shaun Taylor ('10) earned AE All-Conference Second Team
-Senior defenseman Dan Schultz ('09) joined Bustamante as a member of the AE All-Conference First Team
-Schultz was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I First Team
-Coach of the Year honors to Neil Roberts and staff
-A final ranking of #25 in the Collegesoccernews.com poll
-A final RPI rating of #20, the highest for any America East team since 1998
