Loyola Spoils BU's Night

Senior midfielder Christina Gomez scored with one second remaining in the second half to tie the game at 1-1 and the Loyola University Greyhounds (2-2-1) and the Boston University Terriers (2-1-1) played to a draw Friday afternoon at Geppi-Aikens Field in Baltimore.

BU senior forward Farrell McClernon (’10) gave the Terriers a 1-0 lead with her second goal of the year in the 78th minute. Fellow classmate, and tri-captain, Emily Pallotta (’10) picked up the assist on the play and it appeared the goal would stand until Gomez struck in the 90th minute off of a corner kick. Kelly Farrell served the cross into the box and Gomez was able to get free and tie the game.

In overtime, BU had three great opportunities to end the game but two chances hit the post and one was stopped by Greyhound keeper Brittany Henderson. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Luscinski (’12) found the post in the first overtime and then was denied on a 1v1 with fifty seconds to play in the second overtime. On the ensuing corner, sophomore midfielder Krista Minto ('12) was able to get a touch on the ball. To BU head coach Nancy Feldman, it appeared the ball was in the back of the net. Feldman did point out after the game that; “it’s not a loss.”

"This is a game we should have won," noted Feldman. "I felt we were the better team...I thought we stepped up and showed unbelievable character in the overtimes."

Sophomore keeper Annie Tooley (’12) came on in the second half and finished with five saves. Tooley made three stops in the second half and denied Loyola on two attempts in the first overtime. Henderson had a superb game and finished with nine saves as the Terriers out-shot the hosts 20-10.

The Terriers will stay on the road as they travel to Morgantown, West Virginia for a matchup with the seventh-ranked Mountaineers. BU will then get a five day rest before taking on perennial power UConn next Friday in Storrs, CT.
