BU-BC Winter Classic Confirmed

After weeks of speculation, the rumors are finally confirmed. Boston University and Boston College will face off in a Winter Classic of their own at Fenway Park. That’s right hockey fans, for one night during the upcoming season, the Battle of Comm Ave will be relocated to Yawkey Way. The matchup, which has been scheduled for Friday, January 8th, will mark the first time that two college teams participate in a Winter Classic.

Honestly, the name “College Winter Classic” just doesn’t exude the intensity of the BU/BC rivalry. Sadly, to this point my creative efforts have only produced “The Fenway Feud” and “The Ballpark Brawl.” Alliteration is easy enough, but I’m currently working on some sort of “Green Line/Green Monster” combination. Feel free to add your own suggestions, and check back here by the end of the week for my final decision.

The game will be played a week after the annual NHL Winter Classic, which will pit the Boston Bruins against the Philadelphia Flyers on January 1st. The ice will most likely remain on the field until the following Friday when the puck drops for the Terriers and Eagles.

With an 8 pm start time, the teams will face off deep into the night, which should create a scintillating atmosphere for players and fans alike. The Winter Classic is bound to leave a lasting mark on the city. As one of the premiere hockey towns in the country, Boston certainly deserves to host such a remarkable event.

From BU’s point of view, the Classic will effectively neutralize BC’s home ice advantage in the upcoming season. The two teams are scheduled for three regular season matchups, two of which would have taken place at BC’s Kelley Rink. However, with scheduling of the “Fenway Face-off” (that’s my favorite name so far), one of BC’s “home” games will take place at a neutral site.
