#6 Mens Basketball vs. #3 University at Albany - America East Quarterfinals

After 10 minutes it looked like the same old story.
BU wouldn’t be able to match the experience and toughness of UAlbany.
But over the final 35 minutes Boston University showed toughness it has not displayed all season as the Terriers outlasted UAlbany 68-64 in a hard fought overtime game for their first win over Albany in their last eight tries and a berth in the conference semifinals.
“[UAlbany] has been extremely tough, and we have not been able to match that in the recent games with them. If we had lost it wouldn’t have been for lack of effort and I’m really happy about that,” said Terrier head coach Dennis Wolff.
Carlos Strong provided a surprising spark for the Terriers leading the way with 17 points on 4-5 from beyond the arc, including a 3-pointer from the left corner at the buzzer that cut the UAlbany lead to 1 at the break.
The Terriers held a 52-47 lead with 3:10 to go after a Carlos Strong 3-pointer, but UAlbany fought their way back and tied it 56-56 with a John Iati three with 11 seconds remaining.
“We were disappointed when they hit that shot, but we didn’t panic,” said sophomore captain Tyler Morris.
The Terriers struggled to close out the game in regulation, missing 3 free throws over the final four minutes and shooting just 56-percent(17/30) from the line.
The Terriers never trailed in overtime, after sophomore Corey Lowe scored the teams first four points to give the terriers 60-56 lead. John Holland’s Free Throw with 3 seconds sealed the game giving the Terriers the decisive 68-64 edge.
“In the overtime, we were calm,” said Morris.
Boston University played tough defense over the final 27 minutes of regulation, when they outscored UAlbany 39-29. During that time, UAlbany was 5-27 from the floor.
Junior Captain Matt Wolff played physical defense on UAlbany senior Brian Lillis, holding him to 4-17 shooting from the floor, although Lillis did end up with a game high 24 points. 16 of Lillis’ points came from the free throw line.
“They were real physical, they swarmed the ball and it made it difficult to get shots up,” said Lillis.
BU also dominated UAlbany on the boards outrebounding them 37-31. UAlbany outrebounded BU by an average of 15 on the year, and BU gets outrebound by an average of 1.7 by its opponents on the year.
“Today before the game if you had told me that we were going to be out rebounded by six I’m not sure we would have come to the arena,” said UAlbany head coach Will Brown.
BU advances to play #2 Hartford tomorrow at 2:30 pm at the events center in Binghamton. That game can be heard on WTBU, with coverage beginning at 2:10 pm.

- Darryl Proctor led four players in double figures with 17 points and 11 rebounds as top-seeded UMBC rolled to a 76-60 victory over eighth-seeded Stony Brook in the first of four quarterfinal contests at the America East Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday.
- Fourth-seeded Vermont shot 56-percent in the second half and scored 42 points, as they erased a 7-point halftime deficit and eliminated tournament host Binghamton 65-57 in the second game of the first session. Conference player of the year Marques Blakely scored 18 points and added 9 rebounds and six blocks to lead the Catamounts.
- Second-seeded Hartford escaped a scare from seventh-seeded New Hampshire 67-64, after UNH's Mike Christensen, Tyrece Gibbs and Eric Gilchrese all missed three pointers to tie in the final 10 seconds. Joe Zeglinski had a double-double for the Hawks with a game high 22-points and 11 rebounds.
