#15/18 Women's Lacrosse @ Massachusetts (2/27/08)

The Terriers women’s lacrosse team opened the 2008 campaign Wednesday at McGuirk Stadium in Amherst by defeating the University of Massachusetts Minutewomen 11-7. Senior Molly Collins paced the Terriers with four goals, while sophomore Rachel Klein posted a solid performance in net, making 10 saves in the winning effort.
The Terriers, ranked 15th and 18th respectively in the Inside Lacrosse and Lacrosse Magazine to start the season, took on a UMass team that had already played two home games, beating Holy Cross 9-5 and losing to #3 Maryland 18-7.
The Terriers were taking on the Minutewomen in their season opener for the 5th straight season, and were eager to avenge last year’s season opener at Nickerson Field, in which the Minutewomen came back from a 7-5 halftime deficit to beat the Terriers 13-11. That game snapped the Terriers 4 game win streak against UMass, and also broke their home winning streak that dated back to April 17, 2004.
Molly Collins scored the first BU goal of the season with 27:56 to play in the first half, beating Minutewomen sophomore goalie Krissy Anderson (10 saves) for the first of the Terriers four unanswered goals to begin the game. Junior Steph Walker scored next off a free position, followed by sophomore McKinley Curro, with an assist from Erica Baumgartner. Less than two minutes later, freshman Mandy Rogers scored her first collegiate goal, off of an assist from sophomore Xan Weitzel.
The Minutewomen, seemingly out of the game for the first fifteen minutes, came out strong after a timeout called by head coach Alexis Venechanos. UMass scored the last 3 goals of the first half, as Holly Drown, Kathleen Typadis, and Kaytlin McCormick got on the board, cutting the Terriers lead to 4-3 heading into the break.
Sophomore McKinley Curro started the scoring in the 2nd half with a tally three minutes in. But two scores, less than a minute apart, by Minutewomen Drown and McCormick tied the game at 5.
Molly Collins then got a free position goal followed by a Weitzel score on a pass from freshman Rachel Collins (Collins’ first collegiate point), which gave the Terriers a 7-5 lead. Less than a minute later, Melynda Zwick scored for the Minutewomen, bringing UMass back within one, before the Terriers reeled off three more in a row. Senior Lauren Morton scored from Walker, sophomore Traci Landy scored off a free position, and Molly Collins notched her third goal, this one unassisted.
Kaytlin McCormick would make one more dent in the Terriers lead with 3:04 left to bring the score to 10-7, but Molly Collins scored the final goal of the game with just over a minute to play, assisted by Morton. For the game, the Terriers outshot the Minutewomen 29-24, and lost the ground ball recovery and draw control contest to UMass 15-11 and 11-9, respectively.
The Terriers are now 1-0 on the season, and their next game will be when they travel to Providence to take on Brown next Wednesday, March 5th. Opening draw is set for 5PM, and WTBU will have the call of that one, with Terriers Today scheduled to take the air at 4:40.
