Men's Hockey vs. Dartmouth (1/15/08)

The Dartmouth College Big Green (7-8-1, 3-7-1 ECAC Hockey) used a third period comeback to stun the Boston University Terriers (6-11-3, 5-6-2 Hockey East) 3-2. Dartmouth’s win over BU was their first since 1982 and snapped a nine game series unbeaten streak for the Terriers.
“I’m not much of a history buff,” quipped Dartmouth head coach Bob Gaudet. “I didn’t realize it to tell you the truth. I was pleased that our guys would be able to get a good road win against a team that clearly plays their butts off.”
Dartmouth senior goalie Mike Devine held the Terriers at bay throughout the game with 31 saves. He made a number of key saves down the stretch to allow the Big Green to make their comeback after entering the third period down 2-1.
Junior defenseman John Gibson scored his first goal of the season in the third to tie the game at 2 and senior center J.T. Wyman put Dartmouth up for good with 1:38 left in the game.
The Terriers dominated the first period using their physical play to disrupt Dartmouth’s rhythm. They had a number of opportunities that narrowly missed giving BU an early lead. BU consistently kept the puck out of their own zone, but could not convert on the other end.
“It’s just inconsistency,” said senior Brian McGuirk, who regained his captain status before the game. “We let them hang around and made a couple mental mistakes [and] they capitalized.”
Dartmouth would strike first in the second period on an early wraparound goal by sophomore left winger Rob Smith with 14:36 remaining. It was Smith’s second of the year.
BU answered right back less than a minute later to tie the game on junior forward Jason Lawrence’s wraparound for his fifth goal of the season.
“As the game progressed, they played harder and harder and harder,” BU head coach Jack Parker said. “We didn’t play hard enough. I was disappointed.”
The Terriers took the lead midway through the second when senior forward Bryan Ewing streaked up the left side of the rink and swerved in front of Devine for a backhand. The goal was Ewing’s 11th of the season – a team high.
Dartmouth came out in the third far more aggressive and quick than in the first two periods.
Gibson’s game tying goal came with 12:45 left to play. He took a slap shot from the blue line, which sophomore goalie Brett Bennett then deflected back out to him. No Terrier defensemen picked up the assignment and Gibson’s second slap shot eluded Bennett.
Wyman’s go-ahead goal was a backhand from Bennett’s right side which he misjudged.
Unfortunately, the Terriers could not catch a break. Right before Wyman’s goal, freshman forward Joe Pereira scored what appeared to be the go-ahead goal for BU. Unfortunately, the Pereira had already been waved offside.
BU called a timeout with 1:21 left to play and Bennett was pulled from the game for an extra forward. Bennett finished the night with 14 saves.
“At home,” Lawrence said, “we’ve got to get the killer instinct and start finishing teams off.”
The Terriers sent a flurry of shots at Devine in the final minute but he repelled them all, capping off a stellar night for the Big Green.
Terriers Notes:
- With the Terriers blowing a 2-1 lead late in the game, it marked the second time this season the team blew a third period lead. The Terriers are now 5-6-2 when tied or leading after two periods of play.
- The Terriers still have not won a one-goal game this season. The team is now 0-6-0 in one-goal games. The team isn’t much better in two goal games, with a record of 1-2-0.
- Coach Parker said after the game that senior goaltender Karson Gillespie is expected to be out four weeks, after suffering a high ankle sprain in practice last week.
