The Terriers' men's basketball team snapped their four-game losing streak on Wednesday night at the Roof, as they cruised to an 82-72 victory over the University of New Hampshire Wildcats. The win was the 250th win of head coach Dennis Wolff's career.
The Wildcats (4-10, 1-2 America East) drew first blood on junior guard Tyrece Gibbs' layup at 18:54 in the first half, to go up 2-0. However, that would be their only lead of the game. From there, sophomore guard Corey Lowe took control for the Terriers (4-10, 1-1 AE), nailing three straight three-pointers to give the Terriers a 9-2 lead just 2:37 in, a lead they would never look back from.
The Terriers got their first conference win of the season without the services of sophomore big man Scott Brittain. Brittain was the Terrier's leading scorer in their loss at Binghamton, but coach Wolff said after the game that Brittain tweaked a muscle in his back on Tuesday, and that he is day-to-day.
The Terriers' first conference win also saw some notable line up changes. Freshman John Holland made his first career start while red-shirt junior Matt Wolff came off the bench for the first time all season. Red-shirt sophomore Tyler Morris started alongside Lowe in the back court, while junior Max Gotzler and sophomore Valdas Sirutis started up front to round out the starting five.
Lowe, who led all scorers with 30 points, scored 18 of them in first half. Lowe went 4-for-9 from behind the three-point line in the first half, before cooling off in the second half, going 2-for-7. Lowe is now averaging 29.0 ppg in the Terriers' four wins. The Terriers led 44-28 at the half, improving to 4-0 on the season when leading at the break.
In the second half, the Wildcats did the best they could to hang on. The Terriers led by as much as 21 with 9:46 to go in the contest, after Morris hit his only field goal of the game. Morris went 1-for7 from the field on the night, but made up for it at the line, going 8-for-10, to give him 10 points in 25 minutes of play. But after Morris' field goal, the Terriers went cold. The Terriers lead slipped to 14 before sophomore guard Carlos Strong hit a jumper with 5:36 to go.
To their credit, the Wildcats fought to the bitter end, but already over the limit, they had no fouls left to give. The Wildcats outscored the Terriers 44-38 in the second half, but it was not enough, as the Terriers won the game by ten, 82-72, in their highest offensive output of the season.
Also helping out in the Terriers effort was Gotzler, who scored a career high 11 points, to go along with a career high 5 rebounds, in a career high 35 minutes. Strong added 14 points off the bench, with 3 assists and no turnovers. As a team, the Terriers turned the ball over only 13 times, compared to the Wildcats' 17, and outscored the Wildcats off turnovers, 20-12.
Freshman guard Alvin Abreu led the Wildcats with 20 points, while Gibbs added 19. Junior guard Eric Gilchrese added 9 for the Wildcats, while running the offense with 4 personal fouls for the bulk of the second half, before finally fouling out with 17 seconds to play.
The Terriers will try to go above .500 in conference on Saturday, when they take on the Hartford Hawks (7-9, 1-0 AE) at 6 p.m. The next WTBU broadcast of Terriers' men's basketball will be Wednesday at 7:40 p.m., when the University at Albany Great Danes come to town in an early season showdown.
