Men's Basketball vs. UMBC (1/22/08)

The Boston University Terriers (5-13, 2-4 America East) were unable to find their stroke at Case Gymnasium on Tuesday night, as they lost to the UMBC Retrievers (13-7, 5-2 AE), 62-40.
The Terriers were once again without their leading scorer, sophomore guard Corey owe, who was sidelined for a second straight game, and on crutches, due to a swollen knee. The Terriers leading scorer Tuesday night was sophomore guard Tyler Morris, who netted 12 points, all from beyond the arc. Freshman forward John Holland scored 11 points, and led the team in rebounds, with 8.
Boston University took their only lead of the game, 3-2, with 19:01 left to play in the first half, off of a Morris three-pointer. UMBC got their lead up to 5-3, before sophomore forward Valdas Sirutis tied the game on a two-point jumper with 16:55 to go in the half. That would be the Terriers last field goal for 10:21.
“It was men against boys tonight,” said Terriers head coach Dennis Wolff. “If we’re getting virtually no points from the post then they are going to crowd our guys on the perimeter.” The Terriers were outscored in the paint, 20-14.
UMBC went on a 14-0 run until sophomore guard Marques Johnson hit a free throw to make it 19-6 with 8:08 to play in the half. By the time Morris hit his next three-pointer, with 6:34 to play in the half, UMBC had gone on an 18-4 run over the 10:21 BU did not hit a field goal. If that wasn’t enough, at one point in the first half, the Terriers had a 14.9 shooting percentage.
“I was really proud of our efforts on the defensive end,” said Randy Monroe, head coach of the Retrievers. “I think that really triggered our offense.” He was right, as UMBC was able to get 17 points off turnovers, while BU had no points off of turnovers.
By the end of the first half the Terriers had gone 5 for 28 from the floor, including 3 three-pointers. All three of those shots came from Morris, who scored more than half of the Terriers first half points.
Meanwhile, UMBC played a consistent game throughout the night, going 23 for 54 from the floor. The points for UMBC came from the three big men on the floor, as senior Cavell Johnson scored 13, and sophomore Justin Fry and junior Darryl Proctor each got 12 points. Proctor also managed a double-double in the game, bringing down 12 boards including 2 on the offensive side.
“We thought that we could look to go inside against BU,” said coach Monroe
The Terriers were not helping their cause either, who by the end of the game shot 25% from the field.
The Terriers went 24% from beyond the arc, getting 4 three-pointers from Morris and the other 2 coming from sophomore guard Carlos Strong, who also dished out 5 of the Terriers 11 assists on the night.
The Terriers will look to bounce back as they face Vermont on Friday night at 9 at Agganis Arena. That game can be heard on the WTBU main stream, beginning with Terriers Tonight at 8:40 pm.
