Women's Hockey vs. Vermont (12/2/07)

After a heartbreaking loss at the University of New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon, the Boston University Terriers (4-9-2, 2-3-0 Hockey East) returned to Walter Brown Arena, and defeated the University of Vermont Catamounts (4-9-1, 0-6-1 HE) to take two points on the weekend, and move within one game of a .500 Hockey East record.
BU head coach Brian Durocher called the victory a “solid, technically sound” effort.
BU dominated in the first period, and was finally rewarded when on the penalty kill, freshman forward Jillian Kirchner picked up a loose puck and tore down the right side boards. Coming up to her was junior co-captain Gina Kearns. Kirchner dished it to Kearns, who beat UVM goaltender Kristen Olychuck (25 saves) 5-hole to give BU a 1-0 lead.
Kirchner struck again in the third period, when she received a pass from junior forward Caroline Bordeau off of a faceoff. Kirchner found daylight between Olychuck’s right pad and the post. The puck ricocheted off the right post, parallel to the goal line, before finally sneaking across to give BU some insurance.
“My heart was pumping when it was 1-0,” Kirchner said. “We haven’t done too well in the third period as it is.”
Junior Allyse Wilcox provided stability in net, making 21 saves look effortless for her first shutout of the year.
“She was fantastic last night, and very sound today,” Durocher said of his netminder. Wilcox has also developed into a much better puck handler.
BU iced the game with just under a minute left in the third period when senior forward Stephanie Armstrong collected an Erin Seman pass just to the left of Olychuck and sent it home to give BU a 3-0 lead.
Terrier Notes:
- Gina Kearns’ goal in the first period was the Terriers’ first short-handed goal of the season. Overall in special teams, BU was a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, although they were unable to convert any of their 4 power play opportunities.
- Junior Amanda Shaw missed the first game of her career on Sunday. The junior defender was listed as a “healthy scratch.” Durocher said after the game that Shaw was given the day off to “watch a game, take a look, and get a different perspective” after a stretch of rough play on her part.
- BU’s next game will be at home as they take on archrival Boston College. That game can be heard on WTBU at 7, with Terriers Tonight leading things off at 6:40.
