Women's Hockey vs. St. Cloud State University (11/16/07)

After winning two straight games in convincing fashion on their 7-game homestand, the Boston University Terriers (2-7-2, 0-2-0 Hockey East) have dropped two straight after falling to the St. Cloud State University Huskies (6-4-3, 4-4-2 WCHA) 5-0 at Walter Brown Arena on Friday night. The Terriers came out of the box flat, and were outmatched on all sides by a good Huskies team.
As has been the case this year, the Terriers started out weak in the first period, but at times, they were able to apply good pressure. Their first power play came just over a minute into the game when Husky defender Diana Karouzos was called for interference. BU peppered SCSU goalie Kendall Newell (27 saves) with 6 shots and some good attempts, one by Julie Poulin. The senior defender had a nice breakaway through traffic to get a near shot on Newell, who made a great left pad save.
St. Cloud got on the board 9:18 into the game when sophomore forward Holly Roberts skated with the puck around the net, then passed to sophomore Caitlin Hogan, who was on the doorstep, just in front of the crease . Hogan ripped a one-timer that beat BU sophomore netminder Melissa Haber (24 saves) left-side. Haber had been on the right post to guard against the rap-around, and wasn’t able to move fast enough to get to the puck.
It took under two minutes for BU’s deficit to grow. It started when Melissa Anderson was called for a checking penalty at 10:23. On the ensuing penalty-kill, SCSU senior captain Laura Fast took the initial shot, which Haber saved. The rebound bounced far from Haber, and came into the heart of the crease, where junior forward Sammy Nixon was waiting. Nixon nailed it above Haber, who was lying on the ground.
Despite thee power-play opportunities, the Terriers weren’t able to muster any offense. After senior Husky Marie-Michel Lemieux went into the sin bin for high sticking, BU wasn’t even able to get out into the neutral zone.
When the Terriers lose focus, the wheels seem to come off. This period was no exception. Junior forward Laurel Koller had a beautiful pass from freshman forward Jillian Kirchner on the left side. She was un-harassed in front of Newell before she lost control of the puck. Pucks either couldn’t land on sticks, or when they did, they bounced funny. The Terriers were everywhere except where they needed to be.
Of course the refereeing didn’t help either. When the Terriers were on the power play late in the first period, Karuzos was called for hitting form behind. Play continued, and the Terriers enjoyed a 6-on-4 advantage, taking a few shots on net and collecting the rebounds for themselves. However, a quick whistle from the refs ended the BU momentum, despite the fact that the puck, which was ruled touched up by SCSU, was about to land on a Terrier stick.
In the second period, sophomore forward Felicia Neilson completely undressed two members of the Terrier defense, made a lateral move on Haber, left to right, and beat Haber’s glove side. This was the second ofSt. Cloud
Later in the second, Fast proved that she didn’t need an extra skater to score. She went coast-to-coast on a right-side breakaway, and was at the races when she squeezed by sophomore defender Sarah Appleton at the SCSU blue line. The Terriers kept the pressure up in the beginning of the third period, but fell behind further when senior forward Marie-Michel Lemieux tipped in a shot from assistant captain Brittni Kuyper, who took a slapper from the right circle.
BU had some good opportunities in the end of the third; a couple of rebounds landed near the crease, but BU wasn’t able to get that tip-in they wanted, and suffered their first shutout of the season.

- Boston University Head Coach Brian Durocher switched up the lines. Junior forward Gina Kearns dropped down to the second line, while the speedy Lauren Cherewyk slid over to the right wing of the first line. After the game, Durocher said that he intended to keep the lines the same for Saturday’s game. Tune in at 12:40 p.m., on the alternate stream for coverage of the game. The game will be the last game of the Terriers’ long homestand.
